Hartford: printed by Barlow and Babcock , M,DCC,LXXXV. [1785] – First Edition, leather bound – 6″ tall x 3″ – Good+ full leather with 4 raised bands on spine – cover corners rubbed but binding tight; 2 small worm holes at base of spine – pages toned with some edge chipping but 95% legible; last page detached but present – index of hymns, index of first lines – 348 pages. Owner Jeremiah Baldwin’s signature with purchase date 1786 and his age as 14 years is repeated on the front fly leaf. The same handwriting has marked Com [Common metre] and Long [Long metre] next to several hymn titles. The preface states how a committee appointed by the (Congregational) General Association of Connecticut invited Mr. Joel Barlow of Hartford in 1785 to adapt Isaac Watts’s hymns for use in American thought and worship (Congregational church) and publish them together with “a Collection of Hymns; The whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in General.” Joel Barlow (1755-1812), Yale graduate; poet (“Hasty Pudding”), Revolutionary editor and publisher, and U.S. diplomat. His wife Margaret had Baldwin family connections. Size: 16mo – over 5¾” – 6¾” tall
